Welcome from Our Department Chair and Professor Wendy F. Hansen, M.D.

As Chair of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, I’m honored to oversee a group of faculty, staff, and trainees who are leading the state in women’s health.

Pillar I:  Excellence in Education

Our educational programs include:

An outstanding OB/GYN residency program.

Two fellowship programs, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology; the only two of their kind in the state of Kentucky.

A third-year clerkship providing foundational knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology.

High-quality training for fourth-year medical students and visiting students.

Preterm birth: patient and provider education programs. An implementation study around cervical length screening in the community

Aspirin trial and its effects on uterine Doppler’s and HDP

The effects of environmental toxins (phthalates) on ovulation and reproduction

Pillar III:  Advanced Clinical Care

  • Kentucky Angels program brings High Risk ultrasound and consultation to mothers facing pregnancy complications across 12 different Kentucky rural communities through Telehealth.

  • PATHways: Our Team takes on the Opioid epidemic in Kentucky. An inclusive prenatal program for women with Opioid Use disorder

  • Complex Advanced Benign Gynecologic Surgery including Urogynecology, Pelvic Pain, Fibroids and Endometriosis

  • Complex Obstetric care for genetics, ultrasound, Fetal Care Program for mothers with fetal problems, Palliative care

  • Primary Care for maternity, family planning, midlife and postmenopausal care

  • Complex Care for Gynecologic Oncology

Pillar IV: Diversity and Inclusion and Equity 

Foundational pillar to ensure all faculty, staff, fellows, residents and students feel welcome in our department, and that ALL women are cared for by competent and compassionate physicians. 

Pillar V: Community Engagement

Tackling the problems of the state and bridging the distance of the rural communities by improving access to care through Clinical and Research programs

Taking on the challenges of the increasing nationwide increase in maternal mortality. Physicians are leading the state committee understanding the causes in Kentucky and designing interventions to decrease.
